July 12, 2018 Vietnam Veterans of America Alamo Chapter 366 Minutes

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: by President Ruben Perez at 1601 hours.

PLEDGE: Salute to Colors and Pledge of Allegiance by all.

INVOCATION: Invocation was given by Chaplain Giglio.

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS:  Board of Directors Robert “Bruce” Hill was absent.  Quorum present.

PRESENTATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarship recipients listed below were presented with a $1000 check and scholarship certificate.

  • Casey Nicole Aranda – not present, she was in class. Ms. Aranda received her $1000 check last month for Summer Registration. Scholarship certificate was accepted by Sponsor Thomas Ballinger.
  • Bradley Giglio – accepted in person, Sponsor Chaplain Mike Giglio
  • Michaela Rendon – accepted in person, Sponsor Steven Guerra
  • Diana Salinas – accepted in person, Sponsor Jose Salinas
  • Sebastian A Tapia – accepted in person, Sponsor Oscar Rosales

NEW MEMBERS:  None

READING OF MINUTES:  Secretary, Cheryl Van Syckle, provided copies of minutes to members. Motion made by Carlos Vela to accept minutes as published.  2nd by Wm Douglas Van Syckle.  Passed to accept. Motion carried.

  • Secretary provided sign in roster.  Please correct/add telephone number and email address so she can update the Roster. See Minutes Attachment 1 [2018/07/12 Secretary’s Sign-In Sheet].
  • Secretary provided Memoriam of member Howard T. Ray with Viewing, Funeral and Interment dates and times.  See Minutes Attachment 2 [2018/07/12 Howard T. Ray Memoriam].
  • Secretary completed VVA Deceased Member Notification and sent out notice to VVA National and TSC. Minutes Attachment 3 [2018/07/08 Deceased Membership Notification: Howard T. Ray].

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Treasurer, Ruben Villafranca, read Financial Report and provided copy to Secretary see Minutes Attachment 4 [2018/07/12 Treasure Report].   Motion made by Secretary Van Syckle to accept financial report as read.  2nd by Enrique Flores.  Passed to accept.  Motion carried.

  • Treasurer ordered 10 small and 10 large VVA 366 jacket patches.
  • Thank you note received by Saint James Acts Retreat for last month’s $500.00 donation.

NATIONAL DELEGATES REPORT:  Delegate Cheryl reported she and Delegate Wm Douglas Van Syckle will be driving to the VVA National Leadership and Education Conference in Palm Springs, CA.  They leave on the 20th of July and return on the 1st of August.  They will be giving a report of the conference at the August 9th meeting.

1st VICE PRESIDENT REPORT:  1st VP, Ed Stiteler reported fund raising has started on the Bexar County Mission Reach Veterans Park.  Public Affairs Chair John Rodriguez stated the Park is located on the corner of Probandt and Merrick.

FIESTA COMMISSIONER REPORT: Commissioner Dan Medrano reported on 2019 Fiesta activities and provided written report to Secretary see Minutes Attachment 5 [2018/07/12 Fiesta Commissioner Report]. 

  • Submitted $150 FSCA Insurance and PMO Membership invoice for payment
  • Turned in 2018 Event P&L Statement and 2019 Allocation & Grant Application forms.  Due Date: Sept 1, 2018.
  • Reminder:  July 24, 2018 @ 3:30PM BOC Meeting – Allocation and Compliance Workshop at San Antonio Public Library, 600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX.

Motion made by Fiesta Commissioner Dan Medrano to buy ¼ page advertisement in  in the Fiesta Commission Magazine which is due by Sept. 1, 2018.  2nd by Treasurer Ruben Villafranca.  Passed to accept by membership. Motion carried.

Motion made by 1st VP Ed Stiteler to form a committee to decide picture for Fiesta Advertisement.  2nd by Treasurer, Ruben Villafranca.  Passed to accept by membership.  Motion carried.  Committee formed as per membership request:  Five Committee members are: Tom Ballinger, Ed Stiteler, Cheryl Van Syckle, Mike Giglio and Carlos Mujica.

FIESTA MEDALS DISCUSSED: Tom Ballinger submitted design for Fiesta 2019 Medal.  A total of five designs for 2019 Fiesta Medal were presented for viewing by members.  Membership will vote on design to be used as VVA Alamo Chapter 366 - 2019 Fiesta Medal at the Aug 9, 2018 Chapter 366 meeting.

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT: Chaplain Mike Giglio gave Report. Announced passing of member Howard T. Ray and Mary Villafranca’s Mother.  We have one member with upcoming surgery and Ricardo Esquivel reported one of our members is in the VA Rehab Center.  Please keep them in your prayers and visit or call our member in VA Rehab Center.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

MEMORIAM BANNER:  Ray Montez presented deceased member William Babin’s nametag for the Chapter’s Memoriam Banner.

LAST MONTH’S EVENTS:  Secretary thanked members who attended last month’s events:

Event: Friday June 15, 2018 from 3-7pm Women Veterans Day @ Koehler Pavilion, Brackenridge Park.

    The event was attended by Pat Biggs, Cheryl Van Syckle and Wm Douglas Van Syckle. 

Event: June 26, 2018 @ 1:30 to 4:00 pm Vietnam War Commemoration Ceremony, 950 S General McMullen,

    Suite 105, San Antonio, TX 78237. Hosted by Humana.    The event was well attended by Chapter 366 members.

Event: July 9, 2018 @ 6pm Retirement of the Flag at VFW Post 76.  Sean Habina and Tom Ballinger reported that

    the event was well attended by Chapter 366 members.

NEW BUSINESS:

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Member Alfred Arriaga announced Sammy’s Embroidery will make patches for shirts.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Ray Montez announced Rockport Warriors United Veterans Retreat in Rockport, TX.  Provided trifold brochures of Rockport Warriors United (RWU).  See Minutes Attachment 6: [2018/07/12 RWU Brochure]

ANNOUNCEMENT:  1st VP Stiteler announced recognition of Alamo Chapter 366 30th Anniversary by VVA National

  • Treasurer announced the 6 scholarship recipients to receive $1,000.00 each: All scholarship recipients asked to be present to receive scholarships at Jul 12, 2018 @ 4pm meeting.
  • Motion made to pay delegates costs of $1686.00 to travel to Palm Springs, CA for VVA National Convention. 2nd and passed to accept. Motion carried.
  • Motion made to order 10 small and 10 large VVA 366 jacket patches. 2nd and passed to accept.  Motion carried.
  • Motion made to give St. James Acts Retreat $500.00. 2nd and passed to accept. Motion carried.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

  • VVA 2019 CALENDAR PHOTO CONTEST:  Chapter 366 “All Veterans Memorial” picture #4213 was entered into the contest by Secretary on May 31, 2018.
  • Fiesta Medals discussed.  Will start on new medal.
  • Bexar County Veterans’ Park Report by Commissioner:  No report
  • MACV Reunion:  four members attended the reunion on May 19, 2018 at Vietnam Memorial:.  President extended thanks to attendees.
  • 4th of July Activities:  No activities were announced.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE.......PUT NOMINATIONS FORWARD TO THE MEMBERSHIP, TOOK NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR, NOMINATIONS WERE UNOPPOSED,THE SECRETARY CAST ONE VOTE TO ELECT THE SLATE  BY ACCLAMATION. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL NEW OFFICERS ELECTED.
